What makes this installment of American Horror Story the best is that fright is not the focus instead, Ryan Murphy centers the series on historical content—racism, Salem Witch Trials—and female power. This episode is not different; the women are on top, controlling with catty conversation, snappy dialogue, and witchcraft. Tonight’s “Fearful Pranks Ensue" was all about public enemy number one: Marie Laveau—and flashbacks explaining rivalries. In fact, it opens with Angela Bassett’s Marie giving us Rosa Parks-realness in the 60’s, as she unleashes zombies on a group of white men who hung a young African American boy. More on Parks Laveau later.
Back at all-girl Hogwarts, we see Fiona killing Madison through the perspective of Fiona’s mad-about-her-mute-lover, Spalding (Denis O’Hare). The butler is left to clean up Fiona’s mess as she is interrupted by Queenie, who was hurt by Marie Laveau’s minotaur lover. Bloody Queenie is taken to her bed by Cordelia and Fiona—who brings her back to life—to recover from whatever he did to her. It’s during this time momma Fiona finds out Cordelia was responsible for this since she visited Laveau. Tisk, tisk. But really, it was Laveau wanting to attack Kathy Bates's Madame LaLaurie not Precious!
At Laveau’s hair salon, Marie, now sporting Brandy-realness, receives a box…with her lover’s bull head and blinking eyes. Speaking of mutilated lovers, Killer Vag realizes her Build-a-Boyfriend Frankenstein is on the loose.
Fiona is getting dressed for Halloween as LaLaurie is girl crushing on how pretty (and young) she looks. In Queenie’s room, Nan (Jamie Brewer) informs Cordelia that the witch council has arrived. The council—Frances Conroy's
Vivienne WestwoodMyrtle Snow, Will & Grace's Beverly Leslie, and Frump—are there not because of Queenie's attack, nor because Cordelia visited Marie, but because Nan summoned them. TWIST! Turns out, Ms. Clairvoyant can’t hear Madison anymore and believes she’s dead. So, after a few snarky jabs from momma Fiona, the council investigates and questions all the witches. This leads to Queenie delivering a great line about Madison: “If she’s dead, it’s probably because she got wasted and offered the grim reaper a hand job or something.” Probably. Or maybe Fiona sliced her neck.
Brandy Laveau is preparing to go to war with the white witches, but her fellow voodoo colleague reminds her she made an agreement with Anna-Lee in the 70’s. Cue flashback: Laveau, now giving us Foxy Brown-realness, and Christine Ebersole's Anna-Lee signing a truce. (I wonder if Ebersole was paid scale for that?)
Since we’re on the subject of 70’s flashbacks, we’re given a SENSATIONAL one regarding Fiona,
Vivienne WestoodMyrtle (wearing tartaaaaan), and Spalding. Turns out, Myrtle and her tartaaaan cape knew Fiona killed Anna-Lee to become supreme. They also knew Spalding had witnessed it. Myrtle decided to curse his tongue to only tell the truth during his testimony to the council. Of course his tongue gets severed.
Present day Myrtle, with her red-Lady-Gaga-latex-gloves, reminds Fiona that she killed Anna-Lee and Madison and that she cut Spalding’s tongue. In another flashback it’s revealed he cut it himself out of love for Fiona. So, Myrtle asks poor mute Spalding to write the name of the witch who muted him; he writes Myrtle Snow. And Conroy’s Myrtle has a brilliant outburst. Sadly, she’s interrupted by Cordelia who says momma Fiona didn’t kill Madison out of fear she was going to replace her. Madison had a heart murmur so poor healthy = can’t be supreme.
Now in a red head wrap, Marie is performing some ritual surely to wake up the dead. While she’s doing that, Cordelia and momma Fiona are bonding and lying to each other at a bar. Fiona expresses she doesn’t like her daughter’s husband. (Probably because he just blew his lover’s brains out!) Anyway, this ends with Cordelia having some sort of acid thrown in her face by some cloaked figure after she vomits in the restroom.
Spalding is shown playing tea-time and dress-up with Madison’s body. As most butler’s do with the dead. Downstairs the girls and LaLaurie get two visits; first, Patti Lupone’s gorgeous son Luke (Alexander Dreymon); second, LaLaurie’s zombie daughters. Trick or treat, indeed!
Are LaLaurie’s daugheters going to kill her? Or she still immortal? Will Patti Lupone return? Can we get more shirtless scenes with Luke? Will he sleep with Nan? Is Queenie a virgin? Is Cordelia’s husband a lady killer? Can Fiona get away with Madison’s death? Will Marie get revenge or start a full-on war? Is Marie behind the acid thrown at Cordelia’s face?
